THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ACADEMIC SELF- CONCEPT & STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS
This study was undertaken to examine the relationship between academic self-concept and academic performance of secondary school students in khana local Government Area of Rivers state. The population for our study comprised all the 420 seiner secondary three (3) students in the 22 seiner secondary schools in the L.G.A. The simple random sampling (with some aspect of stratification) was used to draw a sample size of 210 senior secondary three (3)students in eleven (11) seiner secondary school in the L.G.A (i.e. 50% of the total population of the study ). Four research questions were asked to guide the study. The researcher with the assistance of the project supervisor developed an instrument title “Academic self-concept and Students Performance in School Questionnaire (ASCOSPSQ)” use to collect data for the study. The data collected was analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Coefficient of Correlation (r). From the analysis of the data collected, it was established that there is a significant correlationship between academic self-concept and academic performance of secondary school students. It was further established that this relationship between this two variables are also based on the gender and socio-economic status of the students. It was also established that there are certain factors that affect the general and academic self-concept of the students. Based on this finding, some conclusions were drawn and several recommendations made.
